Thoughts about weapons and the Avengers

Olivia mentioned this last night, and since I already have too many feelings about Bucky “a tommy gun and a smile” Barnes, I want to talk about the weapons that the Avengers use, and what it says about their characters.

Let’s talk guns for a second.  Traditionally, it’s usually established that superheroes don’t use guns.  I think this is because guns are a very gritty, human weapon.  Superman doesn’t need guns - he can punch your face off if he wants.  Batman doesn’t even have powers beyond technology, but he never uses guns (and I don’t know much about this, but I know it’s really important in his universe, and if Olivia wanted to go on a rant about that she totally should).  The ones with guns are always the criminals - and not even the supervillains, usually, but the dudes with ski masks running away from the bank with sacks of money.  For all their power as a weapon, guns are seen as surprisingly ordinary in a metahuman context.  And I think we need to emphasize the brutality of using a gun, too.  Swinging out of nowhere and knocking someone flat has a very different connotation from whipping out a gun and riddling someone with bullets, even if ultimately you inflict about the same damage.  Superheroes defend.  Guns are intrinsically offensive, no matter how necessary.

What then, in an age where superheroes have grown far beyond Superman, can we say about the superheroes who do wield guns?

Coming back to the Avengers, look at the other weapons they use.

Bedtime Story: The Insomniatic Scientists Club

Inspired by a conversation I had with Olivia earlier tonight.  I should have been studying for French, but instead my Brucefeels got all tangled up with my Tonyfeels, and this happened.

If I ever pull together that Brucefic I was writing, I’ll probably include this scene, but I’ll have to rewrite it.  For some reason Tony demanded that I do this from his perspective.  He really is such an attention whore.
